Before he was Captain Lorca in Star Trek: Discovery, everyone probably knew Jason Isaacs for playing Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies. As it turns out, Isaacs wanted to play someone else in that movie—Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockhart.
Talking to Digital Spy, Isaacs said:
"I didn't audition for Lucius, I auditioned for Gilderoy Lockhart. I was mightily pissed off when they asked me would I mind reading for a different part."
As it turns out, Isaacs didn't want to play a villain since he was already playing Captain Hook in the 2003 Peter Pan. He continues:
"I was about to go play Captain Hook [in 2003's Peter Pan] and didn't want to do two children's villains. I went back in and read then went home… I said to my agent, 'When they call, tell them no, thank you very much, I am about to go play Captain Hook'. He said, 'Just think about it over the weekend'. I said, 'No, I don't want to think about it – it's fun and lovely and flattering but I am not playing two children's villains!'"
We all know that Isaacs eventually took the role, and it was all thanks to an army of relatives who wanted a visit to the set of Harry Potter.
"Over the weekend, everybody I knew called me – nieces, nephews, godchildren and then the parents… They all tried to persuade me to take the job – not because they cared about me but because they wanted to visit the set! So I took the job and thank god I did!"
Even if he didn't get the role of Lockhart, I still think that Isaacs got the role of Lucius Malfoy perfectly. He's very good when it comes to playing villains, and the fact that he's playing the Captain in Discovery is already giving me a "is he or isn't he a bad guy" vibe.
