HBO in Preliminary Talks for Game of Thrones Prequel

HBO is still talking about the possibility of making a Game of Thrones prequel, The EW reports. HBO programing president Casey Bloys confirmed the network and George R.R. Martin were discussing it. He declined to be more specific about the prequel plans, however.

"I would say it's still kind of preliminary ongoing talks," Bloys said regarding the prequel plans. When asked if they had settled on a time period in the Game of Thrones universe's vast vistory to focus on, he said, ""There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn't point to any one and say, ‘This is what we're going to do.'"

Bloys also talked a bit about the final season of Game of Thrones, though he was similarly reticent. When asked about what the final episode count of season 8 would be, he said, "I'll take as much as we can get." Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss have previously stated that they want to keep the final season to six episodes.

There have been rumors of the final episodes of Game of Thrones being released as movies. However, Bloys does not seem to be on board with the idea. "I want everything I can get for HBO, I'll just leave it at that." The gels with previous statements by HBO insiders that the Network would rather keep Game of Thrones available only to HBO subscribers.

A Game of Thrones prequel could turn out either very well or very badly. I wonder how involved George R.R. Martin would be in such a project. What do you think? Do you want a Game of Thrones prequel?
