HBO Confirms Game of Thrones Season 8 Will Be The Last

During the Television Critics Association's summer press tour on Saturday, HBO programming president Casey Bloys told the press and the first question he answered was about the future of the HBO epic fantasy series. He confirmed that the show's yet-to-be-announced eight season will be its last, THR reports.

"Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do," Bloys said at the Television Critics Association's press tour in Beverly Hills on Saturday. "Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more. I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show."

The seventh season will debut its seven episodes next summer, and with the production delay, the executive confirmed that Thrones will be out of the running for the Emmys next year. For the 2016 Emmys, Thrones received 23 prime-time nominations, more than any other show. The production was delayed because the show requires heavy amount of winter location shooting for the next season (There will be a production unit filming in Iceland).

The seventh season was confimed to consist of seven episodes, and the producers have previously noted that they are planning to have a total of 75 episoes for the whole series, so that means that Season 8 will most likely have 8 episdodes, but Bloys said that the number has yet to be determined, and conversations for a spin-off is still being discussed:

"We've talked about it," he said. "It's not something I'm opposed to, but it has to make sense creatively. I'm not sure the guys can wrap their heads around it when they are about to start production. We're open to it — the guys aren't opposed to it, but there's no concrete plans right now."
