Guardians of the Galaxy: Groot Is Dead, Baby Groot Is His Son

James Gunn broke the Internet when the Guardians of the Galaxy director revealed that Baby Groot is not a reincarnation of the original Groot. Though he has clarified this statement before, Gunn actually broke some hearts when he revealed that Baby Groot is actually the original's son.

And to think this revelation came after a very silly topic discussion.

It all started when fans were asked if they would rather save Baby Groot or a Porg from Star Wars. Fans were divided, due to how cute both creatures are, with Gunn showing some bias by saying that the obvious choice is Groot. This resulted in a very entertaining thread which fans can check out here.

When Entertainment Tonight host Ash Cronnan tried to argue that Groot couldn't die, Gunn tore hearts when he revealed that the current incarnation of Groot does not have the memories of the previous one. Fans started getting heated with their questions, wondering why Groot wasn't too different from the previous one but Gunn stayed ahead of them, saying that he has been with them for two months so that's why the creature already has a relationship with the group.

This is very different from the comics, where each incarnation of Groot retains his memories and heals over time. In the now-canceled Guardians of the Galaxy comic, Groot can't grow into his original form for some reason and it's being billed as a huge mystery, which will hopefully get resolved after Infinity Countdown.

Baby Groot and the Guardians of the Galaxy will appear in Avengers: Infinity War on May 4. They will also appear in the sequel, which comes out on May 3.
