Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2: Sylvester Stallone Gave His Salary Back; Says Why He Decided To Join The MCU

Sylvester Stallone will be debuting in the Marvel Universe in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and it seems that the veteran action hero has a deeper reason than a paycheck to join the universe. He, like some other people, believes that this world of superheroes has become this generation's version of mythology.

During a press conference for GOTG Vol. 2 (via Inside the Magic), Sly says:

"Early on in my career I became fascinated with mythology. Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces and so on and so forth. When I started doing Rambo, [I came to understand] there's an evolution that takes place. Every generation has to find itself, define its own heroes, define its own mythology. And [the MCU] is this generation's– and maybe even the next generation's– mythology. And when Kevin invited me on board I said, ‘This is interesting because I haven't gone here. I'm kind of Earth-bound. I'm terrestrial. This is something that takes place in a whole other sphere where James and the Marvel people have created their own world, their own reality.

"So I said, ‘Yeah, let me visit. Let me drop in here and see what's up, where the future is going.' And it was great. It got me out of the house [away] from my three daughters. And that's why I gave them my salary back."

Stallone wouldn't be the first person to think of comic book heroes' potential for modern mythology. Some fans have considered the possibility that Superman, Batman, and Iron Man have become the Zeus, Poseidon, and Hercules of this generation. They're just another form of stories that have embedded themselves permanently into the culture.

It's a very interesting thought, and I think it's pretty cool for Stallone to embrace something that is of the newer generation.

Stallone appears in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which hits theaters May 5.
