Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2: James Gunn Reveals Ego's Powers

Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) dad has been a topic of speculation since the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and the character, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell) will be making his first appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Being an ancient being, fans can expect Ego to have an impressive skillset of powers under his belt, and director James Gunn has gone to clarify.

In an interview with Complex, Gunn says:

"Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he's been alone for millions of years and he's learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell… I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill's mother."

Of course, Quill's relation to Ego is what made him powerful enough to wield an Infinity Stone without dying in the first movie, so it would be impressive to see just exactly what Ego is capable of in the sequel. Hopefully the movie also explores how he met Quill's mother in the first place.

Interestingly enough, though Ego is a character from the comics, he was not originally Star-Lord's dad at all. In the comics, Quill's father is J'son of Spartax, the Emperor of the Spartoi Empire — making Star-Lord actual royalty. Gunn seems to be very adamant about the Ego connection, and says that he's been planning it since the first movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is directed by James Gunn, and the movie hits theaters May 5.
