Gotham By Gaslight Is The Next DC Animated Film

With the release of the Batman and Harley Quinn animated movie this year, DC animation is already setting its sights for their next project. News has it that the studio is working on an adaptation of the Elseworld comic, Gotham by Gaslight.

According to ComicBook, Gaslight will be a special feature on the Batman and Harley Quinn DVD. Not much has been revealed at this point, but we do know that the movie will also be coming out straight to DVD.

For those unfamiliar, Gotham by Gaslight explores an alternate reality Gotham City in the year 1889 and has Batman chasing down Jack the Ripper. The comic also has appearances from classic characters like Jim Gordon as well as a crazy man who murdered his wife and ingested a poison that left him with a permanent grin—sound familiar?

It's also worth noting that one of the co-writers for the story, Mike Mignola, is the creator of another comic icon, Hellboy.

I'm really digging DC's attempt to delve into classic stories from the comics. Some people may say that the studio may be out of ideas, but if the movie can get some fans to pick up the original book, then it's all well enough for me. That's how Zack Snyder also sees his adaptations.

No official release date has been announced for Gotham by Gaslight, but you can catch Batman and Harley Quinn on shelves Aug. 15.
