George R.R. Martin Says HBO Is Actively Developing Three More Game Of Thrones Prequels

It looks like HBO isn't just working on one Game of Thrones prequel series.

According to A Song of Ice And Fire author George R. R. Martin, the premier cable network is currently working on three more prequel series for fans, saying the shows are currently in "active development."

Posting on his blog, the popular fantasy writer decided to give fans an update on the status of the other Game of Thrones television shows, saying that while one of the five original prequel series has been shelved, the others are still in active development.

Here's what Martin wrote in his blog:

"As for the other successor shows… if you have been following along, you know that we started with four, and eventually went to five. One of those has been shelved, I am given to understand, and of course Jane's pilot is now moving to film. But that does not mean the others are dead. Three more GAME OF THRONES prequels, set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development. Everything I am told indicates that we could film at least one more pilot, and maybe more than one, in the years to come. We do have an entire world and tens of thousands of years of history to play with, after all. But this is television, so nothing is certain."

Earlier this month HBO announced that it was going to film the pilot for one of the five potential spinoffs of Game of Thrones, the one under Kingsman and Stardust writer Jane Goldman. Goldman is to serve as the showrunner of the yet-to-be-titled prequel series. Set in the past of Westeros, the show features an adventure far off from the events of Game of Thrones.

Now, this new report by Martin reveals that Goldman's series isn't the only one in development, adding more options for HBO.

However, while it's definitely exciting news for Game of Thrones fans, the shows still aren't set in stone. It's very possible that the network won't greenlight any of the shows after working on the pilot – though were definitely hoping that all four series makes it through.

Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres sometime next year.
