Gears of War 5 Will Just Be Called Gears 5

When Coalition announced Gears 5 during Microsoft's E3 press conference, many expected the title to revert to Gears of War 5 since it happened before with Gears of War 4. Apparently, that won't be the case with this game, as it will stick with the title that was announced during E3. It's a pretty unexpected move but Coalition have their reasons.

On Twitter, franchise head Fred Fergusson revealed why the name change was made to IGN editor Ryan McCaffrey. Fergusson explained that the franchise will still be known as Gears of War but since most fans already call the series Gears, it made sense to shorten the game's name for the fifth entry.

Plus, since the franchise is growing, a simpler name will be needed for products and spin-off titles. Fergusson joked about Gears Tactics, though it wouldn't be too far-fetched since Halo has an RTS series called Halo Wars. Plus, some fans might be tired of cover-based shooting and might like a different scenario with these characters.

Gears of War continues to be one of the most popular franchises under Microsoft and the fifth installment should get Xbox One fans excited. The most recent E3 trailer was more interesting than some of the more recent games and could add some freshness back to the series.

Gears 5 is slated for a 2019 release and will be exclusive to Xbox One and PC.
