Garfield Creator Jim Davis Is Making A Comic Based On Galactus And Silver Surfer

With Jim Davis generally known for his work on the ever-popular Garfield, Marvel has tapped him to work on a cartoon strip focusing on Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Davis work will be featured in a special issue of Squirrel Girl, and it basically has Galactus being a giant planet-eating Garfield and the Silver Surfer as Jon.

Check it out:

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Davis explains:

"Ryan explained to me, he wanted it to be done in our style. He likened and wrote Galactus as Garfield and Norin Radd as Jon. That determined what they were going to look like. When you look at the Silver Surfer, he's 75 percent of the way there anyway with Jon, all we had to do is give him the big eyes. That was a natural. John kind of hangs around Garfield anyway, he's the straight man to Garfield's gags and has to get him food. He's like Garfield's herald. Galactus was tougher. We were throwing stuff back and forth, and the initial sketches weren't working for Galactus. I said okay, we gotta make him fat. The guy eats planets, for god's sake! Once we do that, it's a little less Galactus but certainly a lot more Garfield. It looked more natural. Obviously, Galactus has put on a few mega-tons for this strip."

The strip are actually fun, and I would like to see more of these silly adventures of Galactus and Silver Surfer. With writer Ryan North said to have been tapping a lot of other cartoonist for their special input, I'm curious on who else will be making their contributions. Galactus as Garfield would never have been characters I thought that could cross over.

With Squirrel Girl being one of the lighter heroes of Marvel, it's nice that the comic has a sense of humor. For now the Galactus Gags comics are just a teaser, but we still don't know how much Davis actually made for Marvel. We'll just have to pick-up a copy and find out.
