Gameplay Footage From Pitched Star Wars Space Combat Game That Was Never Released

Star Wars Battlefront II may be the most popular Star Wars video game for the current generation of consoles right now but it also faced a lot of criticisms, especially about the game's flawed microtransactions that EA is known for. While there are still fans still enjoying Battlefront II, some are still wondering about the games that never saw the light.

One of them is an open world Star Wars space combat game from Double Damage, the team behind the cult classic Rebel Galaxy. Back in 2016, they pitched the game to Electronic Arts, showing the kind of space combat experience we've seen from games like Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter.

The video, which you can watch below, shows off iconic ships like the Millennium Falcon and the X-Wing in space combat action. There's a lot going on in the footage, and the whole gameplay looks better than the space combat we've seen in Battlefront II.

Double Damage's Travis Baldree recently talked to Kotaku about the game they pitched, saying, "This was back in 2016, and we pitched a modernized take on X-Wing with all the classic bits." Their idea was to keep the idea of a campaign but add new features to suit modern audiences like control modifications to suit control pads and adding pilot aids. They also want to add the ability to save a mission's progress at any point instead of restarting a 60-minute mission even after reaching the 55-minute mark.

"It was a long shot, and we had near-nil hopes that it would be seriously considered, but we probably did it to please ourselves rather than out of any hope that it would get greenlit," Baldree said.

It took the company two to three weeks to put the video pitch together but it didn't come to life. "EA was very gracious in listening, but it never came to anything, and we moved on."

Even if this game was released, I don't think that it would be a hit among audiences. Most gamers would rather purchase a Star Wars games that include different types of gameplay, not just a space combat campaign. Sure, Battlefront II has a lot of flaws but it still delivered a variety of gameplay that fans could enjoy.
