Game of Thrones Season 6 Finale 'The Winds of Winter' Sets New Series Record

The Game of Thrones Season 6 finale, titled The Winds of Winter, set a new record for HBO's epic fantasy drama, drawing in 8.9 million viewers.

According to Nielsen (via New York Times), Sunday night's finale pulled the biggest overnight audience the series has ever had, beating Season 5 finale's prior recod of 8.1 million viewers. Since the Battle of the Bastards episode hyped fans and even topped IMDb's Top 100 list of best TV episodes of all time, this news isn't really surprising.

On top of that, USA Today also reports that Game of Thrones is averaging a whopping 23.3 million views (including online and on-demand streams) each week this season, which is 15% moe compared to last year's figures.

Season 7 is expected to premiere next Spring, but sadly, the showrunners recently confirmed the number of episodes left for the show. If the show continues to impress with its upcoming future epic battles, I wouldn't be surprised if this new record will get crushed in next year's finale.
