Game Of Thrones Theory: Why Ned Stark Chose The Name Jon Snow

It was revealed in the Game of Thrones 7 finale that the real name of Jon Snow was Aegon Targaryen, but some fans are lead to ask—why did Ned pick the name Jon in the first place? There's an interesting theory that points out as to why.

A Reddit user (via BroBible) has pointed out that Ned has named all of his three biological sons after men he was close to. Robb Stark was named after Robert Baratheon; Bran was named after Brandon Stark, Ned's brother; and Rickon was named after Ned's father.

We know that ‘Snow' is a common last name for bastards born in the North, but it's possible that Ned chose the name Jon after his (and Robert's) mentor, Jon Arryn.

The theory then continues that Jon is a fitting name for Ned's nephew since Jon Arryn had raised Ned like a son even if he really wasn't—much like the way Ned brought up Jon Snow as his own. If this was the case, then Jon's name would have been a clue to his identity from the very first season.

Though we never really got to meet Jon Arryn in the show, his death was the very thing that ignited the civil war within the seven kingdoms; all thanks to Lysa Arryn and her ridiculous crush on Littlefinger. Hopefully we get to see more of Arryn's backstory in the last season.

Game of Thrones 8 is set to come out in either 2018 or 2019.
