GOTG Vol. 2: Elliot Lurie, Songwriter For Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), Comments On The Song's Use In The Movie

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a movie where the story and the music go hand-in-hand, and the film opened with Looking Glass' Brandy (You're A Fine Girl). The song doesn't just pop up either, it's actually served as a dark metaphor for Ego (Kurt Russel) and his plan for the universe. Elliot Lurie, the guy who wrote Brandy, has commented on the use of his song in the film.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lurie says:

"The first Guardians is not the type of movie that I would normally watch, but I had heard so many great things that I put the DVD in and from the first moment I was hooked. I got a request from my music publisher about nine months ago to use 'Brandy' for sequel, and I immediately said we have got to get this into these great movies. And then I started to read scene descriptions sent over to the publisher and I said, 'Wow, this is more than a background tune. This is really in the story."

Lurie also commented on the song being used by the movie's villain to justify his means, and it turns out, he's still fine with it.

"And maybe, in retrospect, subconsciously it was a metaphor. It is certainly the use that has shined the brightest light on the song since it was originally a hit."

I'm really happy that Guardians is bringing back so many classic hits from the 70s and the 80s, and any kid from the audience watching the movie can have a chance to look back on music they would normally ignore. Personally, I'm not a fan of all the new EDM stuff that's coming out, but the Guardians soundtracks have led me to some very interesting finds.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still showing in theaters.
