Fox Gave up a Marvel Character to Make Deadpool

Fox had to give up the rights to a character and then turn said character over to Marvel Studios in order to make the Deadpool movie they wanted, Newsarama reports. Deadpool screenwriter Paul Wernick says that Fox had to give up Ego the Living Planet in their deal with Marvel. Ego will be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

According to Wernick, Fox had to make this exchange in order to gain the rights to alter the powers of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, a character featured in Deadpool. In the comics, the X-Men hero had psychic powers, but in the movie, she had explosive powers. The studio was only allowed to change the character in this way after letting Marvel have Ego.

Ego the Living Planet first debuted in Thor #132 in 1966. He was an intelligent, concious planet bent on conquering the universe. He will be played by Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It's unclear why Fox had the rights to this character, though it is presumably due to the character's multiple appearances in the Fantastic Four title.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming out May 5, 2017. The release date for Deadpool 2 is currently unknown.

Wernick claims that Fox controls "over 400" Marvel characters. It will be interesting to see what future deals the two studios will be making over these characters. What do you think of the exchange? Are you looking forward to Ego's appearance in Guardians?
