Force-Sensitive Caretakers of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Revealed

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is expected to explore the lore of the Force. Now, we got a first look at the keepers of the Jedi texts in a primitive temple (as shown in the first trailer for The Last Jedi).

The Caretakers look amphibious "fish-bird type aliens" in garb that resembles a nun's. Director Rian Johnson told EW that they've lived on Ahch-To for thousands of years, and maintain the ancient temples so they won't crumble to ruins.

"They're all female, and I wanted them to feel like a remote sort of little nunnery," Johnson explained. "Neal Scanlan's crew designed them, and costume designer Michael Kaplan made these working clothes that also reflected sort of a nun-like, spartan sort of existence."

Johnson said that they can communicate to Luke Skywalker via "a blubbery sort of Scottish fish talk."

The director said that the creatures were drawn to the Force-sensitive area in Ahch-To and evolved to become caretakers.

"You get the sense they did at some point or maybe they occasionally do [return to the sea,] but when we see them, they're land creatures," Johnson said. "They're these big matronly creatures, but they have these little skinny little bird feet. They were really fun to work with on set."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to release in theaters on December 15, 2017.
