Flashpoint Directors Were Offered Their Pick of Any DC Movie

After months of searching, the DCEU's Flashpoint had finally found its directors in the form of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. As it turns out, the two were actually offered their pick to direct any DC film, but ultimately chose Flashpoint as their project.

Talking to Collider, Daley explained how they landed working for DC:

"They gave us a list of DC properties and said, ‘Is there anything you'd be interested in?', in no way promising us anything at all."

They were interested in us because of Game Night and Spider-Man. Because of that combination they did kind of say, ‘We'd like you to consider one of our movies.' So we read a number of the scripts, and [Flashpoint] was one—we're huge fans of the character, I collected the comic books as a kid. It was an exciting possibility."

Part of what fuelled their decision to pick the Flash for their movie was the fact that he was in a place in his life that was similar to Marvel's Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man. They explain:

"Just the fact that the character is unique from other superheroes in that he doesn't completely have his sh*t together like Superman does. It's more of a ground-level superhero. It's a relatable way in to a superhero movie in some of the same ways that Peter Parker was for the Marvel side of things."

I definitely love the treatment that these two have given Spider-Man for Homecoming, and I can't wait to see what they have to bring to Flashpoint. Then again, I am kind of worried that the movie will end up being a watered down version of the comic; Homecoming gave Peter Parker his own self-contained story that could stand apart from The Avengers, but the Flashpoint comic dealt with a world-ending scenario that could have easily involved all of the Justice League. Maybe it would be best if they dropped the Flashpoint title? A lot of fans agree it's too early for the DCEU to play that card anyway.

The Flash has come out to be a fan-favorite from Justice League, and a lot of people hope that his solo outing will turn out fine. The way things look now, we might be expecting a release of his movie sometime in 2020.

No release date has been set for Flashpoint.
