Finding Dory Sets Record For Animated Movie With Highest Grossing Premiere

Finding Dory is pretty much expected by many to make it big at the box office, so it's no surprise that it became the animated movie with the highest grossing premiere of all time with its $9.2 million haul on Thursday.

While the Disney Pixar film didn't beat Captain America: Civil War's $400 million-box office premiere, the record $9.2 million is doing pretty good as compared to other hit animated movies in the last few years.

According to Deadline, Inside Out just made $3.7 million, while Toy Story 3 made $4 million. Finding Dory even beat Minions, which raked in a whopping 6.2 million on opening night.

At the rate that Finding Dory is going, it's expected to make more than a $100 million, and this at a time when other big budget summer blockbusters – Alice Through The Looking Glass, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows, Warcraft – have done poorly despite their over $130 million budgets.

Finding Dory is a follow-up to Finding Nemo, which was released in 2003. Fans have been waiting for 13 years for this film, and that's just one of the reasons of the film's success. Add to that the awesome new technology to produce incredibly stunning visuals for the film, as well as a classic Pixar heartstrings-tugging story, it's no wonder why the movie is already breaking records. Obviously, the production process has been grueling, with script drafts broken down countless times. The movie's creators deserve this much success.

Hopefully, this number in the box office doesn't result to real Dorys (Blue Tang) going extinct, as was the case with Nemo's species (Clownfish), which became extinct in several parts of the world following the release of Finding Nemo.

Finding Dory is now in theaters.
