Fifty Shades of Grey Writer Penning Venom Script

The Venom movie is one of the more interesting comic book films coming up. On one hand, it won't be connected to the MCU, which has a lot of fans wondering why they would make this movie without any Spider-Man involvement. On the other hand, big stars like Tom Hardy, Jenny Slate, and Riz Ahmed have been signed, with Michelle Williams reportedly being offered a role as well.

Now, reports are saying that Fifty Shades of Grey writer Kelly Marcel will be penning the script.

Marcel adapted the controversial book into cinema. While it was critically panned, plenty of money was made. It got a sequel in Fifty Shades Darker and a third movie called Fifty Shades Freed will be coming. Sony hiring Marcel is an interesting choice, but if she finds a way to make a Venom film interesting without Spider-Man, she will have done her job well.

Prior to this movie, the only time we saw Venom in live-action was the disappointing Spider-Man 3. Considering how most fans feel about that movie, things can only go up from here for the big Marvel anti-hero. Hopefully, Marcel has the writing chops to make the movie good, though she is at a big disadvantage with the lack of an MCU and Spider-Man: Homecoming connection.

Venom has been described as a gritty, horror-inspired take on the character. It is set for release on October 5, 2018. The character's comic book popularity is surprisingly high, managing to get a Venomverse event from Marvel and an upcoming crossover with Amazing Spider-Man in December.
