Ex Machina Star Alicia Vikander to Play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Reboot

It looks like Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley no longer has any chance of becoming Lara Croft. The Tomb Raider reboot has found its lead actress in Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander.

Early last month, Ridley has been rumored to be in the talks to play Lara Croft. The 24-year-old Brit actress even expressed her interest in portraying the character made popular by Angelina Jolie.

However, the latest news from THR states that Alicia Vikander, who also appeared in The Danish Girl, has nabbed the highly-coveted role. Apparently, Vikander had always been "in the driver's seat" even if Ridley has been highly-rumored to star in the film. Another big contender for the role was actress Cara Delevingne.

Last year, Vikander was also reported as being courted to star in Assassin's Creed and the new Jason Bourne movie. It looks like the 27-year-old Swedish star has now become one of the most sought out actresses in Hollywood, and rightfully so. The actress has already proved her acting prowess in Ex Machina and The Danish Girl, in which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. As much as I love Daisy, I think Vikander will certianly pull of an awesome Lara Croft.

Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug will direct the highly anticipated movie.

The new Tomb Raider has no official release date yet, but it's expected to come out in 2017.
