Evangelion's fourth and final remake film, dubbed Rebuild of Evangelion, is already in the drawing board. And if everything goes right, this will give the franchise a proper ending, Animation Director Takeshi Honda said to UK Anime News Network.
The goal of the production crew and creators, particularly Honda, is that this will be the great and proper ending for the franchise, perhaps just before he retires. Drawing can be taxing for someone like him who's already 48 years old.
"We're actually working on the new Evangelion film right now. We're working hard and it'll come out eventually, so thanks for all of your patience—please continue to be patient, because it's going to be the last episode."
Evangelion has been a challenging franchise for me, whether I look back at watching it as a kid or as an adult. As a kid, I just saw robots fighting. As an adult, I saw the complexities of the personalities involved—and just how important having a psychologist even in a fictional anime world truly is.
Following the anime series, there are three films released some years back, including Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. The last movie was released back in 2012. While there is still no theater premiere dates scheduled, it seems that this particular episode is taking longer than the others.
