Emilia Clarke Talks About Dothraki Langauge in Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones season 6 will see Emilia Clarke's Daenarys Targaryen in a tight situation with the Dothraki once again, right after her reign on Meereen. In previous season 6 trailers and promo videos, we see the Mother of Dragons getting captured by the nomadic warriors. She's taken to see their new khal, to be played by Joe Naufahu.

As a result, the 29-year-old English actress has to speak Dothraki again.

In a fun interview with EW, Clarke talks about using the language from George R.R. Martin's novels both on and off set.

Clarke shared:

...it was hilarious. Dothraki is this weird thing as it goes into your brain for as long as you need it to and then [whisper noise] – it disappears, gone.
It's not like Pidgin French where it's like, "Oh, I doneed it," so it comes back. It was doing this scene with Joe Naufahu and the camera is on him. So my brain goes, "We don't need Dothraki anymore because [the camera] isn't on me, it's not on my face, so you can just forget it."
But annoyingly, I still need to speak even though it's his close-up. So I found myself making it up and the hilarity that ensued was ridiculous. I looked at him dead in the eye said: "All-la-tat-tat-tat-TAT-TAT!"

Clarke may not like Dothraki as much as she speaks it in Game of Thrones, but when asked what her favorite Dothraki word is, the actress had a cool answer:

Qoy Qoyi – "blood of my blood." Because you have to do this swallowing thing. In fact, that's my impression of Dothraki – slightly choking on something. Heimlich maneuver!

It's pretty clear that the Terminator: Genisys star finds it somewhat hard to use Dothraki, so it's only natural that she would use another language from the show when she's angry in real life. For Clarke, she says she would use High Valyrian to swear. She shared:

Only one word – and it's the golden card of Valyrian. Not Dothraki, because season 1 was too long ago. Sometimes there are particular moments in life when only one word will do.
Some people get it and some people don't, and that one word is:Dracarys["dragonfire"]. You're just like,Dracarys –and it makes you feel better and the other person has no idea what you're doing.
But in your mind, you're setting them on fire. So there's something beautiful about that. And with the swearing, when you're trying to get into a scene and you're forgetting your Dothraki, swearing does come into that. You just make your swearing sound like Dothraki.

From about any interview I've seen Clarke in, it's apparent that the actress just naturally has a fun personality that's the complete opposite of the stressed out Dany. It's a good thing she's like that. If any Game of Thrones star took the show too seriously, they would probably go nuts.

The highly anticipated Game of Thrones premiere will air on HBO on Sunday, April 24.
