EA Blames Visceral Games Closure On Market’s Disinterest In Linear Games

EA's decision to shut down Visceral Games became a cause for concern in the gaming community, especially when the company commented saying that they were no longer interested in developing linear games because of "what the market wants."

Attending Credit Suisse 21st Annual Technology Conference's investors' presentation in Scottsdale (via Dual Shockers), Arizona, EA Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen decided to elaborate a bit further on Visceral Games.

Reiterating the company's stance on the shutdown, Jorgensen said that it was an economic decision, closing down Visceral Games and that they had to make the move because linear games aren't just what players want.

According to the Financial Officer, Visceral has shrunk in size exponentially during the past six years, and once the company dropped down to just 80 developers, EA decided to cut Visceral games loose. The developer's Star Wars action-adventure game was forwarded to EA Vancouver and Motive in Montreal. Though Visceral's Star Wars game had a lot of unique qualities that would have made it a title that "really pushed gameplay to the next level," EA's review revealed that linear direction was just not something that they (or their market) wanted.

Right now EA is taking a closer look at the game so that they can revamp it into a more online-focused project, and we can only wonder what the turn out may be. Let's just wait and see.
