Dragon Ball: The Creation of Goku's Catchphrase Was An Accident

Say what you will about Son Goku but there is no doubt that he is one of the most influential fictional characters ever made. Yeah, he's a bad father and husband but few characters have left an impact like he has. There's a lot of things that make the Dragon Ball protagonist a fun character, from his simple demeanor to his awesome fighting skills, there is a lot to love about Goku.

One of Goku's love-it-or-hate-it traits is his catchphrase "Yo! I'm Goku." It shows off his childish nature and is heard a lot during episode previews of Dragon Ball Super. Basically, it's a big part of the character so the fact that it was accidentally made makes it more shocking.

Masako Nozawa, who voices Goku, Gohan, and Goten, recently appeared in the Japanese variety show Downtown Now (via ComicBook.com) and revealed how the accident happened. During a recording session, Nozawa jokingly said "Yo! I'm Goku" to a surprisingly positive response from Toei Animation. They liked it so much that they kept it and made it his catchphrase.

Nozawa has been voicing Son Goku for years and clearly has a good handle on the character, so to see her improvise a line that eventually became an iconic phrase is fun. The fact that she continues to voice Goku at her age, she's in her late 80's, shows how much talent Nozawa has.

Fans will be able to hear Nozawa's Goku voice again during Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which comes out on December 14 for Japan and January sometime in North America.
