Dragon Ball FighterZ Takes Some eSports Aspects Into the Game

One of the games that pretty much earned a lot of following for its reveal alone at E3 2017 is Dragon Ball FighterZ--and for good reason.

Bandai Namco and Arc System are working on the title, and considering how the first look and first few details are for the game, it's no wonder that even non-Dragon Ball fans are looking forward to it.

As it looks, Dragon Ball FighterZ already looks different compared to its peers in the fighting game arena. The creators have opted for a 2.5D almost anime look for the fighters, while everyone is looking for space and relevance in 3D battle brawlers. Tomomi Hiroki, the game producer, took to Twitch (via EventHubs) to talk about why exactly they decided to make those small but pronounced movements in the game.

For starters, Hiroki shared that 2.5D was a way of keeping the essence of 2D origins of Dragon Ball fighting and proudly going back to its roots. At the same time, the decision is very forward-thinking in the sense of considering eSports. According to Hiroki, 2D fighting (or even 2.5D) has a better advantage in terms of watching and joining the eSports.

"I think it's really easy for people to consume, be an audience for, and spectate. We took really good elements in the eSports space--2D fighting games obviously are a huge element of eSports--and Dragon Ball, which is of course, a really great platform I think for which 2D fighting game tournaments can be held on. So we tried to merge these two elements that were really a match made for each other."

The good thing about the collaboration between Bandai Namco and Arc System is that, even though the latter is more known for hardcore brawlers, Dragon Ball FighterZ takes the direction of easy consumption. That way, they are able to hook long-time fans of the franchise, as well as brawler gamers looking for a new title to sink their teeth into.

Even the first six fighters revealed for the roster already offer a bevy of playstyles with standard moves, which would easily call out to any fighting game aficionado. We're looking forward to more details revealed later on as we near the game's release.

Dragon Ball FighterZ won't be out until sometime in early 2018. It will arrive on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
