Doctor Who's Matt Smith Cast in Key Role for Star Wars Episode IX

Casting news continues to drop for Star Wars Episode IX, and now reports are coming out that Doctor Eleven has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' conclusion to the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

As per Variety, Matt Smith has been added to the cast list of Star Wars Episode IX, which is currently shooting in the U.K. We don't have any idea on who Smith is playing at this time, but hopefully we'll get a reveal when Lucasfilm thinks it's the right time to market the movie.

Best guess is we get our first look during Star Wars Celebration next year.

Smith joins several new cast members which include Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie. Returning cast members also include Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher — brought to life by unused footage from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

We know that Smith can play a fun good guy with Doctor Who, but he has also proven himself to be a formidable villain. A lot of people may not have liked Terminator: Genisys, but I thought that Smith's voice was just chilling when he revealed himself to be Skynet personified.

No doubt more people could be added to the cast as production goes along. Stay tuned.

Star Wars Episode IX comes out Dec. 20, 2019.
