Disney Planning To Pull Out Its Movies From Netflix And Launch Own Streaming Platform

Netflix subscribers won't be happy, but it seems like Disney is planning to pull out its films from the site in preparation to launch its own streaming service sometime in 2019.

Seeing Netflix's success at online streaming services, various companies have decided to take a shot at making a platform of their own including Amazon Prime and Hulu. While both of these companies pose as significant threats to Netflix's reign as the leading video streaming service provider, it seems like studios have decided to join the fray.

Earlier this year Warner Bros. announced its plans to create a streaming service that would allow movie-goers to watch new releases right at the comfort of home. Today, The Wrap reports that Disney is getting ready to launch two separate streaming services – an ESPN streaming service set for 2018 and another platform set for 2019. In preparation for their launches, Disney has decided to announce its plans to pull out its films from Netflix.

"Today we announced a strategic shift in the way we distribute our content. The media landscape is increasingly defined by direct relationships between content creators and consumers, and our control of BAMTech's full array of innovative technology will give us the power to forge those connections, along with the flexibility to quickly adapt to shifts in the market. This acquisition and the launch of our direct-to-consumer services mark an entirely new growth strategy for the Company, one that takes advantage of the incredible opportunity that changing technology provides us to leverage the strength of our great brands."

While it's exciting to hear that Disney's preparing an ESPN streaming platform that could potentially offer live-streamed NBA, MLB, and college sports games, this decision to pull out its films from Netflix and create its own site poses as a big problem for the popular streaming service network.

This means that subscribers are no longer going to get any Star Wars movies, Marvel movies and anything else related to Disney. Disney seriously is rocking the boat here, dealing another blow to Netflix which already has Hulu and Amazon Prime to compete with.
