Disney Gives Update On Upcoming Live-Action Movies

Beauty and the Beast just hit theaters, and the movie is currently tearing up the box office. The movie is another one in a long list of Disney classics that are getting the modern revamp treatment. Other movies lined up for a live-action remake are 90s classics Mulan and Aladdin, and Disney's Sean Bailey has given an update on the status of future projects.

In an interview with Vulture, bailey talks about the directors who will be taking on the projects. First off, Man from UNCLE and King Arthur director Guy Ritchie is currently attached to direct a live-action Aladdin. Bailey says:

"Guy became interested in doing a Disney movie and we talked a lot about it… When we talked about Aladdin, he said, ‘My stories are really about street hustlers. That's what I know how to do. And Aladdin is a classic street hustler who makes good.' Guy's got his own version of that story in his life. But he wanted to honor and respect the Disney of it all. We never want to feel like we have a playbook to these things because we worry it'll make us creatively complacent. The idea of a highly energized Guy Ritchie Disney musical felt like, Oh, we haven't done that before."

As for the Mulan project, Bailey said that it most likely won't be a musical like Beauty and the Beast, but it's still possible that Disney might change their minds. The movie is being directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider), and Bailey explains, "Mulan is clearly an empowered-female story but we can also do something new in this reimagining, make it a little more muscular, stronger, with touch of Ridley Scott." He also explains how it would be interesting to collaborate with China for the project.

Personally, I think it would be better if Mulan kept to the musical element from the original because that's what added fun to the film. Virtually every 90s kid has grown up to the lyrics of Be A Man and A Girl Worth Fighting For. I don't think Beauty and the Beast would be as successful if they didn't add any of the iconic music sequences. Even Jungle Book was smart enough to keep Bare Necessities and I Wanna Be Like You in the movie.

Aside from that, they've also revealed that Emma Stone is attached to star as Cruella De Ville in a live-action adaptation of 101 Dalmatians focused on the villain titled Cruella.

No official release date has been announced for any of these films, but fans can check out Beauty and the Beast playing in theaters now.
