Director Ryan Coogler Says Black Panther is MCU's James Bond

All the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may all be superhero films but they can be split into different subgenres. Captain America: Winter Soldier is considered to be a conspiracy thriller film, Guardians of the Galaxy a sci-fi fantasy, and Ant-Man a heist film. According to director Ryan Coogler, Black Panther is Marvel Cinematic Universe's equivalent to James Bond films.

In the latest issue of Total Film (via GamesRader+), Coogler discussed how Marvel wanted his film to be MCU's 007:

"When I first started talking to Marvel, one thing they were interested in was for Panther to be their version of James Bond, which I thought was incredibly interesting and exciting. It was a really outside-of-the-box way to look at T'Challa. There are some Bond films that I really, really like, and it gave me the opportunity to go watch some other ones."

A highly-skilled, tech-savvy, and versatile "agent in black" with a strong support system - I can see how they resemble. Maybe just give T'Challa some women to make love with, and you got the perfect Bond recipe. Not to mention the car chase sequences and spy themes surrounding Wakanda.

Synopsis:

Marvel Studios' Black Panther follows T'Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T'Challa's mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

Directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed), Marvel's Black Panther is set to release in U.S. theaters on February 16, 2018.
