Director Rian Johnson Teases Star Wars: The Last Jedi Romance

Star Wars: The Force Awakens might have had very little to do with the exploration of romance between any of its characters, but it seems like The Last Jedi's going to have a bit of romantic drama when it hits the big screen next month.

Sure it might not be on the same level as the coy banter and the connection between Han (Harrison Ford) and Leia (Carrie Fisher) in the original trilogy, but director Rian Johnson promises fans in an interview with Yahoo! Japan (translation via Comicbook) that they'll get to see sparks blossoming between a few characters in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy installment.

"It is certainly true that there is romantic drama, but there is nothing the same as the two lovers of Han and Leia, this time [laughs].This movie, which is after the ending moments of The Force Awakens, each character was beginning to walk their own path. So, my duty was to dig down into: where do those paths go for each character?"

Han and Leia's romance sets the bar high and while Star Wars shippers might be hoping for a some Poe (Oscar Isaacs) and Finn (John Boyega) action, the Last Jedi's also busy tending to other important matters like Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parentage and whether the Jakku orphan will betray Luke (Mark Hamill) by joining Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and turning to the Dark Side.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
