Director Of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Working On New 2018 Anime Film

It seems like the anime film industry's pretty busy with major directors starting work on new projects.

Earlier this week, Makoto Shinkai ,the director many now consider as the new Miyazaki Hayao, revealed that he was starting work on a new project after the global success of his most recent film, Kimi No Na Wa/ Your Name.

Now, another major anime film director, Mamoru Hosoda, has announced that he's working on a new movie set to release next year. Behind great films like Wolf Children, The Boy and The Beast, Summer Wars and of course The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

According to a report by Variety, the movie goes by the working title Mirai and is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival. The publication also provides a short description of the film which you can read below:

"Mirai follows a 4-year old boy who is struggling to cope with the arrival of a little sister in the family, until things turn magical. A mysterious garden in the backyard of the boy's home becomes a gateway allowing the child to travel back in time and encounter his mother as a little girl and his great-grandfather as a young man. These fantasy-filled adventures allow the child to change his perspective and help him become the big brother he was meant to be."

To Hosoda the film is a very personal project that was inspired by the experiences he himself went through as a child. Like his previous work, the director aims to give Mirai a universal appeal.

"There is a common thread in the themes of my films: ‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' was about youth, ‘Summer Wars' was about family, ‘Wolf Children,' ‘Ame' and ‘Yuki' were about motherhood," Hosoda explained to the publication. "‘The Boy and The Beast' was about the father, and my new film is about the relationship between brothers and sisters. ‘Mirai' is about a boy who is trying to reclaim the love of his parents."

It's been two years since fans have gotten a film from Hosoda. Knowing how well the director can weave a story together, anime film viewers certainly have a lot to look forward to next year.
