Director Jon Watts On Why The Spider-Man: Homecoming Cast Needs To Be Diverse

Over the past few months, details on Spider-Man: Homecoming casting have gradually trickled, with a slew of actors filling up mysterious and not so mysterious roles. While the movie's casting choices have been the latest fodder of Marvel whitewashing controversy, with director Jon Watts having to defend Michael Barbieri's inclusion in the cast on Twitter, one has to admit that the movie's cast is already pretty diverse.

Zendaya is biracial, being half-White, half-African American. Tony Revolori is a Guatemalan American. Kenneth Choi is of Korean descent. Meanwhile, Laura Harrier and Donald Glover are African Americans.

Well, according to Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts, there's a specific reason why this is so, and it's because Peter Parker's hometown is in Queens, New York, which is one of the most diverse places on Earth.

In a recent interview with The Daily Beast, Watts explained:

Peter Parker goes to high school in Queens, and Queens is one of---if not the---most diverse places in the world. So I just wanted it to reflect what that actually looks like.

So the director is simply setting up an integral part of the original source material. That said, it's still possible that some of the Homecoming cast could play roles that were previously white in the comics. Still, the diversity of the cast is as realistic as Queens can ever be even as compared to the comics.

Meanwhile, there are still plenty of caucasian cast members in the movie. Tom Holland is of course, playing Spider-Man. Then we have the gorgeous Marissa Tomei as the "unusually attractive" Aunt May. Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark will also be in the film. We also have Michael Keaton, Logan Marshall-Green, and most recently, Martin Starr added to the cast.

Well, it's good to know that the movie is representing the diverse cultures of the real world well, and hopefully, more movies will follow suit.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
