Did [SPOILER] Just Die in Batman #49?

Just when it seemed like Tom King and Mikel Janin couldn't outdo themselves after the excellent Batman #48, the next issue comes out. Fans are still getting their jaws off the floor after reading the finale of this two-part arc, especially with the big wedding itself coming out in two weeks. We all have a lot of questions right now but the one everyone wants to know is if a character was killed off.

SPOILERS FOR BATMAN #49

After The Joker holds Batman hostage, he gets into a brutal fight with Catwoman that leads to both characters being put in compromising positions; holding their near-fatal wounds to stay alive. Selina has a gunshot wound to her stomach while Joker's throat is cut.

Over the course of this issue, we see the two connect on a certain level, remembering the days when they were in Arkham. Eventually, they discuss wanting Batman's love and how Seline was able to give Batman something he needs; a bit of happiness. This is something the Joker is against since he feels that Batman can't be happy and still fight crime at the same time.

In a desperate move, Joker releases his wound and attempt to reload his gun to try and shoot Catwoman. Much to everyone's shock, Joker bleeds out and seemingly dies in front of Catwoman. Batman soon regains consciousness in the end and Catwoman laughs maniacally to finish the issue in ambiguous circumstances.

Did Batman #49 kill The Joker? Probably not since Geoff Johns is working on a Three Jokers comic book that attempts to make sense of that plot thread. Still, it would be one hell of a way to write off the character.

Batman #49 is available now.
