Death Note Light Up the New World Gets New Stills and A White Death God

Make way for a new god—that is, a death god.

Death Note: Light Up the New World is getting a new god, and he's all white and just as creepy as Ryuk. According to Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, the white Shinigami is Arma,

Arma is not the only new thing coming for the latest Death Note movie. The story has seen quite some time pass after the first few live-action adaptations. This time, there's just not one notebook, but rather six that could bring death to whoever's name is written on it.

Seen in the recent teaser trailer, the Death Note murders are happening following a 10-year hiatus. And compared to Light's more enigmatic, supposedly crime-fighting messianic complex, the murders are spurred by a more disturbed individual, Sakura Aoi (Rina Kawaei).

Anime News Network has obtained new screenshots of the movie, which showed some scenes featuring Kawaei in the shopping district.

The new story has also branched off from where the original story had ended. Now, there's a task force that goes after the perpetrators, and their goal is to secure the Death Notes in the world. What's more, the successors of the two mainstays, Kira and L, are also in for the fight.

In the trailer, we also see the white Shinigami very briefly. What his role in this whole chaos is, we still don't know. He may be one of the Shinigamis who are in the human world, the same way that Ryuk was when Light/Kira possessed his Death Note.

Everything in the teaser does have an exciting touch to it, all the way down to seeing so many people getting killed thanks to the Death Notes. Frankly, the trailer is enough to excite the pants out of fans of the original. While I'm not a fan of most spin-offs—especially when the original characters that gave life to the original are gone—but this seems to bring up the notch for crazy-and-messianic-complex meets righteous-and-cunning rivals. After all, they are the successors of Kira and L.

Death Note: Light Up the New World will be shown in theaters in Japan on Oct. 29.
