Deadpool Director Producing Sonic The Hedgehog Movie

It looks like Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Deadpool director Tim Miller would be an executive producer for the movie. Furthermore, freshman filmmaker Jeff Fowler will make his directorial debut with this movie, similar to how Deadpool was Miller's first movie as a director.

Miller has praised Fowler, calling him "an incredible director with strong story instincts." Fowler does have some credibility, directing the Academy Award-nominated Gopher Broke, an animated short that Miller produced. With his experience in animation, there might be some hope in this movie, despite the poor reputation of video game adaptations.

The movie will be a blend of CGI and live-action, similar to Roger Rabbit and The Smurfs. It's a move that will prove to be controversial with fans since a property like Sonic the Hedgehog feels more at home with animation. Hopefully, the film won't have the typical fish out of water story that has plagued similar premises and merely has a live-action Eggman taking on CGI Sonic.

Sonic has starred in a number of animated shows in the past but is still mostly known as a video game character. Though the Sega mascot has been in a number of questionable games, the recent release of Sonic Mania helped the speedy hedgehog gain some momentum. Here is hoping November's Sonic Forces is just as good.

No release date for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been revealed. Stay tuned to Epicstream for more updates on this project.
