Dave Filoni is Now In Charge of Future Star Wars Animation

Dave Filoni, who was the producer and creative director for both Star Wars Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, has gotten a big promotion, Big Shiny Robot reports. It was noted by those who watched the premiere episode of Star Wars Rebels Season 3. that Filoni was no longer credited as supervising director. But now it's been discovered that this is because he's moving up in the world.

Fans noticed that Justin Ridge had replaced Filoni as supervising director on Rebels. Ridge has been with Star Wars animation since season one of Clone Wars. Lucasfilm released this statement regarding Filoni's replacement and subsequent promotion:

Dave is still just as involved as ever - overseeing all aspects of Star Wars Rebels production as Executive Producer and occasionally directing episodes. In many ways, mentoring Justin and moving him into the role as Supervising Director has made it possible for Dave to be even more immersed in the writing and story structure of the show as well as creatively overseeing future animation development. Justin started with Lucasfilm Animation on the first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and worked with Dave before that on Avatar: The Last Airbender, so they've been working together for quite some time..

Essentially, Filoni has become to Justin Ridge what George Lucas was to him. Lucas mentored Filoni all throughout Clone Wars and Filoni is now mentoring Ridge.

Many fans have noted the implication of this statement is that there is another Star Wars animation coming. If Filoni is taking on another project, that would be the only logical reason to relieve him of his role as supervising director so he could focus on his producer role. There have been rumors of new animated Star Wars project coming, and this statement only adds fuel to the fire.

What do you think? Is a new Star Wars cartoon coming? Do you approve of Filoni being in charge?
