Comicbook film adaptations don't necessarily have to follow the source material word for word – sometimes directors take liberties at making adjustments to certain story elements to make their film work.
The origin of Dave Bautista's Drax the Destroyer is an example of an altered story. While in the comics it was Thanos who had killed the human Drax and his family before he returned to life as a living weapon, director James Gunn had turned Drax into a complete alien whose wife and daughter were murdered by Ronan (Lee Pace).
While the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is setting Marvel up for Avengers: Infinity War, some fans find it a shame that Drax's daughter would miss out on the superhero mash-up movie. In the comics Drax's daughter, Heather Douglas survives Thano's attack and becomes Moondragon, one of the most powerful Marvel telepaths.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Bautista reveals how he would also have loved to explore Drax's origin with Moondragon.
When asked whether he would like to see his daughter being played out in Marvel films, his reply was:
"Yeah! Of course! I would love to tell more of the backstory of Drax. Whether or not that will happen, I don't know. I don't know if they'll ever really focus on Drax, but I hope so. I think it's a really interesting story."
Apparently Bautista had been a bit unsure about the way Drax was written in the sequel the first time he got the script, finding Drax full of humor and not as "badass" as he is in the comics.
The professional wrestler changed his mind however after script reads and rehearsals had left him and the rest of the cast rolling in laughter – which doesn't come as a surprise really since Gunn's first Guardians movie was also full of humor.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is slated for release on May 5, 2017.
