Pedro Pascal Calls The Mandalorian a Western Epic on Steroids

The Star Wars franchise has always been considered as a "space western" of sorts and with the arrival of The Mandalorian on Disney+, this is further highlighted both by its plot and the actor playing the titular character himself, Pedro Pascal.

"I think that George Lucas played with the Western undertones with the first movie, ‘Episode IV,' and now they're taking the suggestions of that tone and infusing it with steroids," the actor told Variety in an exclusive interview.

The series follows Pascal as the main character, whom he likens to that of Clint Eastwood. Given that his character barely speaks and dons a Boba Fett-esque mask, he shared in the same interview that he had to reach as far back as his early acting days to be able to play the character with just "posture and gesture."

"Because of ‘Game of Thrones,' I've been invited to be a part of these big movies [with] ridiculous sets in China and London, insane locations, and not to diminish the efforts of any of my previous experiences, but I can say sincerely that this is taking it to the next level for me in terms of the world-building and the attention to detail on the costumes, the creatures, the robots, the entire world," he said.

On the note of Game of Thrones, series creator Jon Favreau compared his aspirations for The Mandalorian to that of the former HBO show. In the same interview, he talked of how he loved Game of Thrones' build-up and how he hopes to achieve a similar effect.

This seems likely given that The Mandalorian will be deviating from the franchise's usual formula. It is set to release episodes on Disney+ on a week-by-week basis, which will give fans a chance to see the galaxy from far, far, away from a different and perhaps broader perspective.

The Mandalorian's first episode is expected to have eight episodes this season, with its first episode now available for streaming on Disney+.
