Anthony Mackie Opens Up About Becoming Captain America

Avengers: Endgame ushered in the end of some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most loved characters and the beginning of the rise of some of its quieter underdogs. Following Steve Rogers' desire to find Peggy Carter and make it to that date he promised to take her, he came back from that 1950's timeline an old man who no longer wanted to call himself Captain America. Instead, he passed it on to the Falcon, Sam Wilson.

Speaking to Deadline, the Falcon and the Winter Soldier actor Anthony Mackie shared his thoughts on his donning of the shield, which he has described to be "very emotional." He has been in the industry for over two decades and talks of how significant the role has been for him, given the history of black people in the country.

"I've been fortunate to do some amazing stuff and work with amazing people," he shared. "For me, to be a Black man in 2019 and be given the helm of Captain America with the history of Black men in this country is a monumental step, not only in entertainment but also in my life. It's been extremely emotional."

Seeing as that he is set to lead the coming of MCU's highly-anticipated Phase 4, he further went on to say: "here's a lot of history and pain and triumph and joy that comes along with me being Captain America."

Mackie, of course, has enormous shoes to fill seeing as that the Avengers' revered Captain has been played by actor Chris Evans since his first appearance in Captain America the First Avenger. Nonetheless, the excitement is definitely there! Cap had to choose Falcon for a reason, right?

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has officially begun filming and is set to premiere sometime in the Fall of 2020. Marvel's Phase 4, on the other hand, is expected to open on May 1, 2020, with the premiere of Black Widow.
