Following reports of a third Ant-Man film in development, actor Michael Douglas has confirmed that another film truly is in the works with Peyton Reed returning as director. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s franchise carefully planned out for the next three years, a lot of fans have been quick to ask where does everyone’s beloved Scott Lang figure in all of this.
Speaking to Collider, Douglas, who plays Hank Pym and has been in the series since its first film, revealed that tentative production begins in 2021.
"It's pretty cool. The Marvel world has really been a great time,” he said. “I love them. I'm having a great time. We're starting a third one in the beginning of January '21."
As for its plots, any solid details have yet to emerge although we imagine Reed may take this as an opportunity to further explain the Quantum Realm following the events that transpired during Avengers: Endgame and what really happened to Janet Van Dyne while she was stuck. In a separate interview with ComicBook, Douglas actually brings this up and elaborates on how he pushed for Ant-Man’s story to be a trilogy.
“There are definitely things in the movie that, if we’re fortunate enough to make another one, there’s a lot to play with,” the actor said. “We spend more time in the Quantum Realm in this movie; obviously, than the first movie but it feels like we’re just dipping our toes into it.”
The film could also include heartwarming and entertaining scenes of Scott trying to catch up with Cassie, who is now five years older and will most likely be played once more by Emma Fuhrman. Or have another hilarious narration sequence from Michael Pena.
Given that 2021 already seems to be a full year for Marvel with the expected releases of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man 3, and Thor: Love and Thunder, it would be safe to say that this third Ant-Man film could be expected to arrive sometime in 2022 together with Black Panther 2.
