Dan Slott Confirms Spider-Man Exit, Will Write Iron Man After

Dan Slott has just shocked the comic book world. Not only did Slott confirm that he would finish up his run on Amazing Spider-Man, the Marvel writer revealed that an unnamed Iron Man series would be his next project. This is great news and it will be interesting to see his take on the hero, especially with Brian Michael Bendis leaving the title after Invincible Iron Man #600.

Speaking with Vulture (the website, not the Spider-Man villain), Slott stated that Amazing Spider-Man #801 would be his final issue. Most fans assumed it would be Amazing Spider-Man #800 since it's a milestone issue but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Interestingly enough, the writer revealed that he knew he was leaving the book after the 800th issue in 2014. Slott confessed that he feels a bit bad for lying to fans since he always made claims about never leaving Amazing Spider-Man. He compared it to the time he said Peter Parker was never coming back when the character was replaced by Doctor Otto Octavius in Superior Spider-Man.

Ultimately, it looks like he's leaving because he has accomplished all he could with the character and is looking forward to his new adventures with Tony Stark.

"I kept having these benchmarks to hit. And then I realized, once you hit ten years and then issue 800, the next benchmarks were way too far away. [Laughs] So I always knew that was the zone. Anyone who follows my Instagram account, every now and then I would post these cryptic numbers from my whiteboard. This running tally, of which, that tally starts in like, July 10th of 2014, where I knew what I was counting down to and no one else knew what I was counting down to. I wanted to lock that in so I could prove I wasn't lying."

His final Amazing Spider-Man storyline is appropriately namedGo Down Swinging, featuring an epic battle between the wall-crawler and the Green Goblin. This storyline will start in March's Amazing Spider-Man #797. Slott's final issue, Amazing Spider-Man #801, comes out in June.
