DC and Neil Gaiman Announce Sandman Universe Line Of Comics

In a rather surprising move, DC Comics and Neil Gaiman have teamed up to announce the Sandman Universe imprint. These will be comics set in the same universe as The Sandman, with Neil Gaiman himself overseeing the line of titles. Considering how we last saw Dream appear in Dark Knights: Metal, this move seems to make more sense in hindsight.

Announced by Entertainment Weekly, the Sandman Universe imprint will launch in August, starting with Sandman Universe #1, a one-shot that will set the stage for four new series. Dream is missing and chaos has erupted because of it. Other important developments include the opening of a rift between worlds, revealing a space beyond the Dreaming.

Gaiman will plot the one-shot with the actual script written by Nalo Hopkinson, Kat Howard, Si Spurrier, and Dan Watters, all of whom will also write the four comics spinning out of the special. The four comics are House of Whispers by Hopkinson, Books of Magic by Howard, The Dreaming by Spurrier, and Lucifer by Watters.

House of Whispers will explore how the voodoo deity Erzulie ended up in the Dreaming of her titular house. Books of Magic will follow up on Gaiman's 1990 miniseries of the same name and explore Timothy Hunter's magical education as he's torn between two powerful destinies. The Dreaming follows Sandman supporting characters like Lucien the librarian and Matthew the Raven as they navigate a Dreaming without Dream. Finally, Lucifer finds the titular devil blind and destitute, trapped living in a small boarding house in a quiet town where no one can ever leave.

No artists have been announced as of this writing. The Sandman Universe #1 comes out in August.
