Chris Hemsworth Credits Ghostbusters Reboot For His Recent Marvel Performances

If you've seen Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War, you'll know that Chris Hemsworth has been a delight as the God of Thunder recently. While he wasn't bad in the first few Thor films or the two Avengers movies, there is a significant improvement over his performance in those films and his more recent ones. Hemsworth's comedy, in particular, has been much stronger.

What might surprise fans about this is the fact that Hemsworth credits the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot for his recent performances. That is a bit shocking since the film received lukewarm reviews and was hated by most fans but let's hear him out.

Speaking with Esquire, Hemsworth revealed that he had a lot of fun with the Ghostbusters film and said that it was his jumping on point to improvisation. He credits the film for giving him some creative freedom, which he used really well on Thor: Ragnarok.

"That was some of the most fun I've ever had on set, and probably my real jumping-in point to improvisation. Prior to that, I'd always wanted to be very confident in the fact that I knew exactly what was on the page, and I had my options worked out and I knew where the scene was going to go. Playing it safe, to a degree. And we just threw all that out the window in that film, and it really opened up a whole other side to my sort of process, I think."
"It was way more freeing and a lot more creatively satisfying, and just more enjoyable, you know? Because there's a spontaneity that's created that you just can't get in a scripted scenario. Now I kind of want to put myself in a position where I feel like I'm right on the edge of getting it wrong and kind of not really knowing what's happening—losing control of it—and I think that's, to me, the key ingredient. You want to keep people guessing. You want to keep yourself guessing. That's what I find is interesting to watch."

Hemsworth's performance received a mixed reaction, with most not really liking how he was written to be too dumb. Still, his work in Thor: Ragnarok was a massive improvement and most will agree that Ragnarok was the best Thor film released. It seems like his work on that mediocre comedy paid off.

We might see more of Hemsworth's improv during Avengers 4, which comes out on May 3, 2019. He will also work with Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson on a new Men in Black movie, where we might see more of his comedy chops in action.
