Star Wars is a franchise that's hard not to love, but it's not perfect. It can't be denied that there have been some dialogue in the movies that made us cringe.
Apparently, Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original trilogy and in The Force Awakens, also has her own share of hated line in Star Wars.
During a recent Q&A session at the Tribeca Film Festival (via Uproxx), the 59-year-old actress shared that the line she dislikes takes place in A New Hope, during R2-D2's holographic mission where she begged Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) to help her and the Rebellion.
Her exact line was:
I have placed information vital to the survival of the Rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit.
It's completely understandable why Fisher hated the line. It's a mouthful and it probably took her a while to nail it. With Fisher having only a few movies to her name at the time A New Hope is being filmed, I can imagine how frustrated the actress must be if she didn't perfect the line correctly after several tries. It's interesting though how much hate Fisher actually has for the line. In fact, she hated it so passionately that she delivered it in a British accent. This was the reason why Princess Leia sounded like royalty in the hologram but American during the rest of the original trilogy.
In addition to delivering the line in a British accent, her hate for the line drove and inspired her to become a writer herself.
Thankfully, George Lucas, who was responsible for the unopoular dialogue in Star Wars, has retired from making scripts for future Star Wars films. His work on the entire saga as a whole is outstanding, but his scriptwriting abilities isn't much to be desired.
The Force Awakens had been penned by screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and Episode VIII is written by director Rian Johnson himself, so we can expect less, if not no cringe-worthy Star Wars lines in the future.
I loved Master Yoda's words of wisdom though. At least we had those in ANew Hope.
Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017. Before that, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released on December 16.
