Captain Marvel Actress Wants to Show How Women Can Make Superheroes Differently

Female superheroes are receiving the limelight for a lot of reasons. There's the much-anticipated fact that they are still under-represented in the superhero genre today.

And for Marvel, this is almost glaring, not only in the fact that the current lineup only has two female heroes, but its first female-led superhero solo movie won't be out until 2019. That said, all eyes are trained on what will happen with Captain Marvel.

For actress Brie Larson, the movie is a chance to show more of "female complexity" in movies, particularly for the superhero movie genre.

In an interview with Collider, Larson said that the role was a great opportunity to showcase the mysteries and complexities of what it's like to be a woman.

"I think women are far more complicated and more interesting that just saying, ‘They're like a dude, and that's what makes them tough and that's what makes them cool.' That's just not how it works, so to me it's this idea of doing this film on this larger scale with really incredible, smart people behind it, with women behind it, that gives you an hour and a half, two hours to sit and see how different a woman can be."

Perhaps the next challenge on Marvel's plate is to make sure that it treats its female superheroes with the same complexity and fun as all the others. This is the one hurdle I'm still holding them up to.
