Captain America’s Villainous Twist Was Part Of “Channeling Star Wars”

A lot of comicbook readers felt betrayed when the Marvel revealed the painful twist that Captain America had been an Agent of Hydra all along. Captain America had meant to be the representation of patriotism and democracy – he was supposed to be Marvel's poster boy.

Though a lot of fans believed that the studio made the wrong choice by giving Steve Roger's the twist of a villain, Secret Empire series writer Nick Spencer explains that the decision to reveal Captain America as an agent of Hydra wasn't meant to hurt fans but instead follow the pattern of Star Wars.

Taking to Twitter, Spencer explained how his work on Captain America is similarly built like the story of the Light Side and Dark Side of the Force in a galaxy far, far away.

"One of my favorite things about SECRET EMPIRE is you get to see Marvel heroes as underground resistance fighters. That's a very different dynamic for superhero characters, one you don't usually see. A lot of the time, SECRET EMPIRE felt like it was channeling STAR WARS more than any previous Marvel stories. I watched ROGUE ONE about a bajillion times to capture that vibe- a dark war story, but still with some humor and character chemistry.

Re: last thread. Woke up to people actually saying "But ROGUE ONE is about people fighting fascism." smh. Yeah- so is SECRET EMPIRE. The most accurate subtitle you could give would be ‘Marvel heroes vs. a fascist takeover of the US.' Read. The. Book."

While it is pretty understandable how fans would feel hurt by Captain America's betrayal, readers have to understand that Marvel isn't condoning the Nazi-supporting version of Captain America but instead fighting to make Steve Rogers pay for his betrayal and his fascism in Secret Empire, just like Lucasfilm made Anakin Skywalker pay for turning to the Dark Side.
