Sony Pictures Won't Be Releasing Major Films Until After Pandemic

The entire entertainment industry is suffering a massive blow due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and it's leaving some companies with no other choice but to delay their upcoming offerings.

Now, The Wrap reported that Sony Pictures has decided to delay their big film releases until the COVID-19 situation is over. Appearing at the Bank of America's 2020 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman Tony Vinciquerra said the following:

What we won't do is make the mistake of putting a very, very expensive $200 million movie out in the market unless we're sure that theaters are open and operating at significant capacity. You'll see a lot of strange things happen over the next six months in how films are released, how they're scheduled, how they're marketed, but once we get back to normal, we will have learned a lot I think and found ways to do things that are somewhat different and hopefully better

Sony's upcoming slate of big-budget films includes Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Morbius, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. From a business standpoint, it's definitely the smartest way to go about things since we're still quite unsure when the pandemic subsides. They also can't afford to take the risk of releasing them on other platforms besides cinemas as it will take away the grandeur of the said films.

For now, Sony will be releasing lesser-anticipated films like The Broken Hearts Gallery on September 11th and Yellow Rose on October 9th.
