Interstellar actor Matthew McConaughey is apparently a huge fan of the Marvel universe which is quite baffling when you think about it now considering the fact that he's yet to appear in any Marvel film. Interestingly, Matthew was reportedly in the running to play Steve Rogers in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but he had another character in mind that he wanted to play.

According to the multi-awarded actor, he expressed his desire to play Bruce Banner aka Hulk following Edward Norton's highly publicized exit. The role, of course, ultimately went to Mark Ruffalo who's enjoyed a near 10-year stint as the green giant. If you're wondering why Matthew didn't score the role, he revealed that he was actually rejected by Marvel Studios.

Speaking with Joshua Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matthew shared that he was more than willing to play Hulk since he was a huge fan of the TV series which starred Lou Ferrigno. However, Marvel Studios turned him down and said: "No, thank you." Ouch.

It's a complete shame, to be honest given the fact that he could've been a formidable replacement for Norton. That's not to say though that Ruffalo isn't doing a fantastic job with the role he's been given because he's portrayed it quite effectively. As unfortunate as that is for Matthew, he could still potentially turn up in the MCU someday, he just needs a good role to work on.

Speaking of the Hulk, Disney+ is currently developing a She-Hulk series.
