Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Major Character Death Isn’t Impossible

It's hard to picture saying goodbye to Naruto—which is probably one of the reasons why Boruto: Naruto Next Generations continues to be a hit for fans. After all, when you have the anime's title set to a hero's name, it's going to be hard to distance yourself from that.

However, that may not be the case with Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto. Talking in a recent interview with Jump (via Kotaku), Kishimoto mentioned that the future of the spin-off may not necessarily be hinged on the titular character's father.

"I think it's okay if it [Boruto] isn't really bound to Naruto. The time period is different and because various original elements are mixed in with the setting… I think I'd like it done with freedom. Because it's Naruto, I think it's also okay if this character that's always been around died [in Boruto]."

This may come in as a shocking statement from someone who has created one of the most iconic characters in the anime and manga history. However, there have already been speculations that Naruto will die at some point, perhaps to let Boruto himself break free from his father's shadow.

Then again, the source points out that Kishimoto may have been referring to Naruto as the franchise instead of Naruto the character. And the death could mean anyone from the franchise.

It's possible that he could be referring to a major change that would bring Boruto to his own arc, instead of living under the shadow of the main franchise. After all, Kishimoto is not even involved in the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga or anime, so he may have been speaking hypothetically on how the spin-off can have a life of its own.
