Blade Runner 2049’s Story Fascinated Harrison Ford to Do a Sequel

After more than 30 years, fans are going to be granted the sequel from one of Ridley Scott's most praised movies. Back then, sequels weren't exactly the main business churner unlike the common trend now.

To have someone return after three decades of waiting between two related movies is something of a marvel—but that's something that Harrison Ford ventured into for Blade Runner 2049. When the sequel comes out, Ford will be reprising his role as Rick Deckard, and it's because of his intriguing story that caught the actor's attention for a sequel.

During a Q&A via Facebook, Ford revealed the reason for going back for a sequel:

"The character [Rick Deckard] is woven into the story in a way that intrigued me. There's a very strong emotional context. The relationship between the character Deckard—that I play—and other characters is fascinating. I think it's interesting to develop a character after a period of time—to revisit a character."

Apart from the emotional pull, Ford also stated that the current situation of the film has allowed for the technology touched on in the original to become something of a marker with today's technology. Tying that with ethical considerations woven into the technology and you have a sci-fi that goes beyond mere mechanics of the science.

Blade Runner 2049 will arrive in theaters this fall. It's directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Ford together with Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Ana de Armis, and Edward James Olmos.
